A Beacon of Hope: Rudo’s Journey to Justice and Healing
When 22-year-old Rudo left Epworth for Mazowe in search of a better life, she entrusted her 3-year-old daughter to her mother’s care. But tragedy struck when the child was sexually abused in her absence. Two weeks later, a distressed call from her mother revealed alarming symptoms—sores on the child’s genitalia. Rushing home, Rudo discovered her daughter had yet to receive critical medical care. Overwhelmed and unsure where to turn, she dialled the Youth Helpline (393), a decision that changed everything. The helpline’s compassionate counselors swiftly guided Rudo. They referred her to Epworth Polyclinic, where the child was urgently redirected to Mbare Clinic for examination by a medical doctor. With clinical care secured, the helpline supported Rudo through the next crucial step: reporting the crime. They connected her to the police, ensuring legal protocols were initiated—leading to the perpetrator’s arrest. “The Youth Helpline didn’t just refer me; they walked with me,” Rudo shared. Counsellors equipped her with knowledge to respond to abuse, demystifying each step of the process. Timely follow-ups eased her stress, proving vital in her darkest moments. Today, Rudo champions the helpline’s role in restoring hope. “They gave me strength to fight for my child’s justice and healing,” she says. Her story underscores the power of accessible, empathetic support—and how one call can ignite a path to safety, accountability, and resilience.
