From Unemployment to Opportunity

31 July 2026

Malcom’s journey from unemployment and uncertainty to becoming a skilled building graduate shows the power of practical vocational training. With renewed confidence, valuable skills and a start-up toolkit, he now hopes to establish his own construction business and create a better future

Before joining the Youth Empowerment Graduate Model in Mahusekwa, Malcom was unemployed and uncertain about what the future held for him. Like many young people in his community, he had limited opportunities to gain practical skills, earn an income or build an independent life. The lack of direction affected his confidence and left him unsure of how he could improve his circumstances. Through the programme, Malcom enrolled in building training, where he received hands-on instruction from experienced local craftsmen. The practical nature of the training allowed him to move beyond theory and develop skills that could be applied in real construction work. As the programme progressed, he gained more than technical knowledge. He regained confidence, discovered a sense of purpose and began to see himself as someone capable of creating his own opportunities. During the graduation ceremony at Mahusekwa Secondary School, Malcom shared his journey with the audience. He became emotional as he reflected on the difference between the young man who entered the programme without employment or a clear plan and the skilled graduate he had become. His testimony showed how access to relevant training and support can change a young person’s outlook and restore hope. After completing the course, Malcom received a start-up toolkit to help him begin using his newly acquired skills. He now aspires to establish his own construction business, generate a sustainable income and contribute to the development of his community. His ambition is not only to improve his own life but also to create opportunities for others as his business grows. Malcom’s story represents the wider impact of the programme: transforming uncertainty into direction, unemployment into practical opportunity and vulnerability into self-reliance. His journey demonstrates that when young people are equipped with relevant skills, tools and encouragement, they can become active builders of their own futures.
